What Fresh, Blue Hell is This?

06Oct06

Seriously, what fresh, blue hell is this?

Fresh Blue Hell

  • a nostalgic retrospective on 70s colour-field art?
  • new, Bush-approved, CIA “information-extraction” method?
  • a photoillustration accompanying an article on corporate methamphetamine use?
  • a photoillustration accompanying an article on the soul-corroding loneliness of urban living?
  • a photoillustration accompanying an article on antidepression drugs and psychotherapy?
  • literally, Hell. And blue.
  • a new, immersive aquarium environment at the Toronto Zoo?
  • a photoillustration accompanying an article on spartan home furnishings?
  • a photoillustration accompanying an article on one journalist’s experiences inside a Wilhelm Reich orgone box?
  • a photoillustration accompanying an article on circuit-party-frequenting homosexuals’ reliance on a squarish, little, blue pill?
  • yet another example of Canadian marketers’ incompetence and an undertalented attempt to approximate urban sophistication?

Yeah, that last one was a gimme. It’s the promotional image for Crystal Blu, a new condominium development a brick’s throw from my apartment in downtown Toronto. And, really, nothing says “home” like a stark, lonely, furnishing-free, monochromatic, psychological-torture prison cell, does it?

As an creative director with a number of real estate developer clients, this gave me a good laugh. Good thing it’s not one of our clients (we’re in Chicago!).

I can’t fathom the mindset of a person who would say, “Oh yeah, THAT’S where I want to live. That’s so me.”

For a person like me — who has sometimes fantasized about how easy it would be to clean an autopsy room if I lived in one — it doesn’t look so bad.
